Doris Yamanoha, MS, RD, CDE
Doris has relocated at least 10 times over the past 30 years - mostly due to her husband's corporate reassignments. They’ve lived in places like Chicago, San Franciso, Alaska, Washington, Guam, Saipan, and southern California. Along the way, she has managed to use her RD skills in a variety of settings. In addition to hospital based inpatient/outpatient positions, she has worked in pediatric specialties, taught college-level nutrition courses for nursing students, conducted nutrition research studies, and even sold infant formulas as a sales representative. She currently lives in Hilo, HI. In June, she will be the new diabetes program coordinator of a community-based health education outreach center. She thinks that life in Hawaii is great - except that she misses the tabouli from Trader Joe's or Whole Foods Market deli, since neither store is available in Hilo. That's what started her "Heart-y Bulgur Salad" quest. She created this recipe trying to duplicate familiar taste and flavors. She ended up adding her own "special ingredients." She has shared it with clients and prepared it for sampling at health fairs with good reviews. When her husband asked her to prepare this for his potluck luncheon at work, she knew she had to submit this to the DCE recipe contest.
