Abstract
Increasing evidence demonstrates that type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed by lifestyle modification that produces modest weight loss and increased physical activity. In an effort to translate this research into the public health sector, staff of Indianapolis-based YMCAs were trained to implement a 16-week group-based version of the Diabetes Prevention Program lifestyle intervention. The results are promising, with a 6% weight loss being achieved at the end of the intervention and sustained 12 months after completion of the program. This intervention suggests that community-based programs hold promise for effective translation of diabetes prevention research.
