Case Study: Licorice Consumption by a Patient with Type 1 Diabetes

Abstract

The following case study presents one patient’s experience after ingesting a specific type of black licorice. The patient was a 62-year-old white female with a 53-year history of well-controlled type 1 diabetes. She had a history of stable microalbuminuria. She developed transient edema, weight gain, increased albumin-creatinine ratio and elevated systolic blood pressure after eating licorice containing licorice extract. The patient purchased licorice with licorice extract as one of the ingredients. She ate a few pieces each day for six consecutive days (May 12–17, 2008).
