Diabetes Education from a Primary Care Perspective John E. Anderson, MD Introduction I had been on the phone with the emergency room and had a walk-in patient that morning, so I was about 15 minutes late getting in to see Mrs. Johnson, who was 2 months late for her 3-month follow-up of her diabetes. Her back pain was flaring up again and she complained of a nasty cough over the past 10 days that had made her terribly fatigued. Of course she needed new batteries for her meter so she hadn’t checked any glucose readings in the past month, making it difficult to gauge her response to the change in therapy made at her last visit. She also needed refills of strips and several other medications, and still had not scheduled a follow-up for her dilated retinal examination despite my office staff trying to help arrange the appointment at her last visit. |
