The Effectiveness Of A Lay Health Advisor Hair Stylists Campaign

Robin Nwankwo, MPH, RD, CDE
University of Michigan Medical School
Ann Arbor, Mich.

Abstract

Diabetes, hypertension and subsequent kidney failure contribute to chronic kidney disease (CKD) rates for African-Americans in Michigan. Over 70% of such cases could be prevented or delayed with healthy lifestyles and medications. The Healthy Hair Healthy Body (HH) campaign trains African-American stylists to educate their constituents on their disease risks and prevention behaviors via a “health chat.” Since 1999, the HH campaign reached over 14,000 clients in eight Michigan cities. Data indicate 60% of clients took a prevention or physician-seeking behavior step. The campaign appears to effectively prompt improved behaviors and increase risk awareness.
