A: After you record your CPEUs for a OTCE or a CPEU event, you can search using your ADA number here. CPEU searching

Q: Where do I take the quiz (test) so I can record CPEUs for an OTCE or CPEU event?
A: You can take the quiz on the MyCPEU page. After passing the quiz, a link will take you to the page to record the CPEU's.

Q: What if I was not a member of DCE when an OTCE was first published and now am a DCE member?
A: You must be a DCE member during the membership year that is published in the particular DCE issue. These dates are also posted with the online quiz downloads.

Q: What if I was a member of DCE when an OTCE was first published and now am no longer a DCE member?
A: CPEs are a member benefit of DCE. Please feel free to submit CPEs while you are a member If you are no longer a member, consider rejoining to take advantage of the many DCE-member only benefits, including the CPEs. See member benefits or join/renew now.

Q: How long will CPE credits stay recorded?
A: CPE credits recorded online for OTCE programs will stay in the DCE database and be available or memebers to search and print certificates for ten years after recording the CPE credits. This is to allow for the different CPE requirements by the different professional credentialing authorities.

Q: If I snail mailed in my answers for OTCE, do I need to record online?
A: DCE prefers you not snail mail in your answers for recording as a volunteer must enter in all this information in the backend. If you snail mailed in your answers DO NOT also record online. Any answers mailed in after January 2007 will be in your MyCPEU account and you can print a certificate for that OTCE online. Please allow 60 days from when you mail in the answers to check it is entered online in your MyCPEU account.

Q: How can the continuing professional education credits (CPEUs) offered by On the Cutting Edge be used?
A: The Commission on Dietetic Registration has approved continuing education credits for reading On the Cutting Edge (OTCE) when the associated quiz is successfully completed. These credits are then recognized by the Commission of Dietetic Registration (providing it meets your learning needs) for RD recertification and by National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators for recertification for continuing education because they are

1) considered independent study
2 ) the Commission on Dietetic Registration is a recognized provider
3) OTCE includes topics relating to diabetes.*

*NCBDE Official statement 3/20/09 by Sheryl Traficano, Director of Operations, National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators: Articles that are included within a journal (or book or online article – any materials that might be read) for which continuing education has been requested and approved (usually following the successful completion of a test) are acceptable as a “type” of activity for the renewal by continuing education option and can be accepted for renewal of the CDE® credential, as long as the activity meets all of the other requirements – approved or accredited by one of NCBDE’s recognized providers, applicable to diabetes, etc. Please visit NCBDE’s web site for the most current information on the renewal by continuing education process.

Q: Where can I find out more about what qualifies for CPEU's for renewing my RD and CDE?
A:

For renewing RD: Commission on Dietetic Registration or CDR's Continuing Professional Education Guidelines (PDF)
For renewing CDE: NCBDE Renewal By Continuing Education

NOTE: While CPEU's that are listed for seminars and conferences (given the appropriate topic and a recognized CPEU provider) usually qualifies for both RD & CDE renewals, other activities may not be accepted by both credentialing organizations, CDR & NCBDE. In some instances, NCBDE (for renewing CDE) does not recognize activities that do qualify to renew for the RD. For example, poster sessions and journal clubs are an acceptable activities CPE for renewing the RD, whereas they are not acceptable with NCBDE for CDE renewal. Please check the rules from the appropriate credentialing organizations/websites.

Q: If I record CPEUs online, do I need to snail mail in the answers too?
A: Do NOT snail mail in your answers if you have recorded online. A volunteer enters in all the mailed CPEU answers and this is not needed if you entered it in online.

Q: What learning codes do I use in recording in my portfolio for CDR?
A: All CPEUs for the OTCE are the activity code 720 and the main learning code is 5190 for Diabetes Mellitus. Depending on the topic of the issue, other learning codes could be used too. Use the learning code reference list included in the portfolio instructions for more learning codes by each OTCE issue.

Q. Can a nonDCE member get CPEU's for reading On The Cutting Edge?
A. No, you must be a DCE member to get the CPEU's associated with On The Cutting Edge.
